Taking apart an iPhone SE requires precision and the right preparation. This compact device holds together with tiny screws and delicate ribbon cables, so a careful approach is essential. Essential Tools and Preparation
Before making any cut, assembling the correct toolkit is the most critical step. A standard Phillips screwdriver will not work with these devices, so precision is non-negotiable. You will need a set of Pentalobe screwdrivers, specifically sizes P2 and P5, to unlock the chassis. Alongside these, a strong magnetic mat or tray is highly recommended to prevent losing the many small screws. You will also need a spudger, a plastic opening tool, and a pair of tweezers for handling the battery connector.
Workspace Setup
Choose a well-lit area free from dust and distractions. Static electricity poses a risk to sensitive components, so consider working on a non-static surface. Have your adhesive strips or fresh glue ready for reassembly, as the original tape loses its bond after being stretched. Remember to power off the device completely and discharge it below 25% to minimize the risk of short circuits during the disassembly.
Removing the Bottom Screws
The process begins by accessing the internals through the bottom edge of the phone. Locate the two Pentalobe screws positioned on either side of the charging port. These screws are often hidden beneath a small diagnostic sticker. Using your P5 screwdriver, carefully remove them and place them securely on the mat. This step grants you access to the main fasteners holding the chassis together.
Separating the Display
With the bottom screws removed, you can lift the display slightly. Insert your spudger or opening tool into the gap between the front glass and the aluminum frame near the top of the phone. Run this tool along the edge to break the adhesive holding the screen in place. Be cautious not to push the tool too deep, as you are only breaking the perimeter glue at this stage. Once the top loosens, carefully lift the screen to a 90-degree angle and disconnect the two ribbon cables labeled ZIF0 and ZIF1 using the tweezers.
Handling the Battery
With the display assembly free, you will see the battery connected by a flat, delicate ribbon cable. Resist the urge to pry the battery out directly. Instead, use your plastic spudger to gently lift the battery connector from the logic board. Only when this connector is fully detached can you safely lift the battery out of the chassis. Logic Board and Final Components
