The Shadow Returns: The History of Dol Guldur
Originally known as Amon Lanc, the Hill of the Serpent, this location was once the capital of the Silvan Elves in the Woodland Realm. The descent into darkness began around the year SA 1000 of the Second Age, when the Valar became aware of a growing evil in the East. Sensing the return of the Dark Lord, the Elves abandoned their fair city, and it was subsequently claimed by the Nazgûl, who established it as a bastion for their master’s return. For most of the Third Age, the fortress lay dormant, its evil seeping into the surrounding forest and corrupting the land, which became known as Mirkwood, a place of perpetual twilight and creeping dread.
The Corruption of Greenwood
The influence of Dol Guldur acted as a festering wound upon the land. The once-lush and vibrant Greenwood the Great withered under its shadow. Giant spiders, bred in the dark pits of the fortress, spun their webs across the forest paths, ensnaring any who dared to venture in.
