Discovering your SD card is not working can be a stressful experience, especially if it contains valuable photos, work documents, or irreplaceable memories. This failure can manifest in several ways, such as the card not being recognized by your camera, computer, or phone, or it might appear corrupted with errors when you attempt to access the data. Physical Damage and Wear
The most immediate reason an SD card might fail to work is physical damage. These cards are durable but not indestructible, and they contain sensitive electronic components. Power loss during a write operation can scramble the directory structure that tells the device where files are stored. In this case, the card itself is often fine, but the device cannot read the map to find the data, making it seem empty or inaccessible.
Device and Compatibility Issues
Before assuming the card itself is faulty, it is essential to test it in different devices. An SD card that refuses to work in your camera might function perfectly in a laptop or a smartphone. Conversely, a card that works in one device might be rejected by another due to compatibility issues. Check the specifications of your device; older gadgets might not support high-capacity cards or newer file systems like exFAT. Furthermore, dirty or damaged card slots can prevent a proper connection, mimicking a problem with the SD card itself.
Logical Errors and Corruption
Beyond physical inspection, many issues stem from logical errors. These are problems with the software layer of the card rather than the hardware. Viruses or malware on your computer can infect the card and corrupt its structure. Sudden system crashes or improper ejections are frequent culprits.
